Mere conversational proficiency in a language is not sufficient for competent mental health services in that language. Professionals who intend to practice in a language other than the language they were trained in need training to bridge the gap between conversational fluency and professional proficiency. We believe that die PSSSP program, with its focus on both cultural and linguistic competency could be adapted for use with other languages and cultures. The use of multilingual training teams can help trainees navigate the complexities and dilemmas presented when working with multiple languages.
