Ion fluxes across cell membranes are mainly controlled by ion channels and pumps [208]. Fluxes of Na+ and K+ cations change membrane potential that can act as physical signals. Calcium current not only serves as a physical signal, but also as a chemical cue, as it operates as a secong messenger in cell signal transduction.
