Abstract

To improve the system performance of ad hoc networks, researchers have proposed many approaches including power control mechanism. Power control is a critical issue to implement mobile ad hoc networks. The main idea of these power control scheme is to use different power levels for RTS/CTS and DATA/ACK. These schemes may degrade network throughput and reduce energy efficiency of the network. In this paper we proposed an Improved Autonomous Power Control MAC Protocol (IAPCMP) that allows nodes to dynami-cally adjust power level for transmission of DATA/ACK according to the dis-tance between transmitter and its neighbors. The power level for transmission of RTS/CTS is also adjusted based on the power level of previous DATA/ACK. We also use maximum power level for transmitting DATA/ACK periodically to aware neighboring nodes for ongoing transmission. In this paper the performance of IAPCMP is evaluated and is shown to yield significant improvement in system performance.
