Abstract

The student's participation for English competitions in Ponorogo increases year by year. This phenomenon is very satisfying. Their ability in such competitions: storytelling, speech, and news reading is quite good and even some of them are very good. Their achievement is influenced by many factors, and one of the factors is their learning strategy and their teacher's strategy used to train them. This study had a purpose to investigate the participant student's learning strategy and the teacher's strategy whenever they were in training. This is a qualitative research with the subject was the students and the teachers of SMP and SMA in Ponorogo that actively participated in English competition. The data collection was conducted in interviewing and observation, further the data analysis used Miles and Huberman model with the steps as the following: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Based on the data analysis result it showed that those students implemented all kinds of strategy: the direct strategy as well as the indirect one.
