Abstract

This paper covers a number of considerations about the subject of parallel volume rendering according to the rendering pipeline, including the choice of parallel architectures, the parallel volume rendering algorithms, the strategies for data distribution, and sorting and composition methods to achieve load balancing. Through the survey of recent parallel implementations, the general concerns and current research trend on the design of a parallel volume rendering system are discussed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
