Abstract

This chapter summarizes the ongoing work to analyze compensatory andnoncompensatory decision-making behaviors using a common frameworkknown as Brunswik's lens model. The authors begin with a survey ofexisting work in modeling compensatory decision-making behavior usingthe lens model and an overview of initial forays into noncompensatorymodeling. An example is provided of an instance in which both compensatoryand noncompensatory decision making may occur in the same task underdifferent circumstances. Formulations of the lens models to accountfor both types of decision behaviors are then discussed followedby speculations on a consolidated framework to incorporate both models.
