Abstract

Water tunnel experiments were performed to study the drag coefficient of a sphere at rest on a boundary of closely packed similar spheres. Results showed that the drag coefficient function tended to conform to that for the case of a sphere in free fall in an infinite fluid. The difference between the drag coefficient functions for a sphere resting on a rough boundary and for a sphere rolling on a rough boundary is illustrated.
