Abstract

The article presents information on metadata. It states that metadata makes the finding, linking and sharing of information much easier. It reports that the National Science Digital Library describes metadata as standardized descriptions of resources that help in the discovery and retrieval of those resources. It discusses the advantages of using metadata including the efficiency at which data is retrieved. It further informs about the types of metadata including descriptive metadata, technical metadata and structural metadata. The components of metadata including syntax, semantics and standards are also discussed.
