Abstract

A summary of the roles of crystallisation and hydration of salts which can cause rock disintegration. Field evidence of salt weathering includes examples from Death Valley, California, southern and eastern Africa, Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan, Bahrain, southern Tunisia and the coast of S Devon. Salt weathering has also been observed at archaeological sites and on modern buildings. Laboratory experiments on salt weathering are also described.-K.Clayton
