Abstract

A brief review is presented of research into the two-way interaction between a star's thermal-gravitational field and its magnetic field. The question of the origin of stellar magnetic fields is considered, stability criteria are discussed for stellar magnetic fields, and the distribution of magnetic flux through Ap, normal A, and late-type stars is examined. The effects of a magnetic field on the interaction of a star with the interstellar medium are reviewed together with the process of rotational braking of the sun and solar-type stars by magnetically controlled winds.
