The structural material used in construction of superconducting magnets requires high proof stress, toughness, and nonmagnetism at cryogenic temperatures. High-nitrogen-containing austenitic stainless steel is a candidate for this purpose, and manganese-containing stainless steels, such as 21-6-9, are considered to be the most promising materials. The authors have investigated the possibility of utilizing Cr-Ni-N stainless steel for this purpose.
