Abstract

Measurements have been made on a collection of New Zealand lavas, from 18 to 6 Ma in age, to determine the intensity of the ancient geomagnetic field. The predicted geocentric virtual dipole moment (VDM) derived from the New Zealand rocks (2.24×1022Am2) is much lower than that obtained from Icelandic rocks of similar age (7.11×1022Am2). The offset dipole model is discussed as a possible explanation for this discrepancy. © 1986, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. All rights reserved.
