Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to give a brief outline and hypothesis regarding human cognition at sea and at the shore. It is supposed that these perceptions are intimately connected with maritime culture, even in the far distant past. The components and categories of littoral cognition may vary, but the basic feature of a binary relationship between sea and land remains.
