Abstract

Vision systems are getting easier to justify. As their payback period decreases, the associated capital outlay also decreases. Pay-back tends to be measured in months for vision systems. Systems can have various different structures. In the past, one would have had to have dedicated processors. Now, it is possible to turn some, or all, of the processor on PC. The structure one chooses depends on the rate of processing he needs. The cheaper PC-based system tend to be for the laboratory, where one has a single captured image and is happy to get the results in a minute or two.
