The results of study of 60 cases of femoral shaft fractures are analyzed. By the judicious combination of supplementary treatment with the fundamental principles of intramedullary nailing, the indications can be substantially broadened. Statistics show that the functional results are governed by the segmental location rather than the clinical type of fracture and the speed with which definitive treatment is rendered following the initial trauma. As squatting remains a cultural necessity in many parts of India, the functional interpretation of the results should be commensurate with the socioeconomic and cultural background of the individual.
