Abstract

Manganese toxicity is an important factor limiting plant growth on acid, poorly drained soils and on sterilized soils. Although of great ecological and economic importance, our understanding of the physiological reasons for growth inhibition due to high Mn supply is still rather limited. The present paper therefore first of all tries to systemize our knowledge in order to identify possible research deficiencies. No attempt is made to review the available literature on Mn toxicity, because excellent review papers have been published in recent years (28, 31).
