As outlined in the previous chapter, the analysis of a European dimension of metropolitan policies builds on existing research in urban and regional studies, local policies and spatial planning. The envisaged analysis of changing spatial concepts and metaphors in metropolitan policies in a multi-scalar polity is linked to a number of theoretical assumptions and particular understandings of policy change that need further specification. Therefore, the following chapter introduces selected theoretical approaches, which contribute to understanding the European dimension of metropolitan policies in supranational, national and subnational contexts.
