Abstract

The paper intends to discuss two main approaches (symbolic and connectionist) to study cognition as prevalent in cognitive science. But as we live in the world, environment and interaction with others play an important role. This thinking leads to theories of embodied and situated cognition, where cognition is seen as taking place not only in the brain, but also in interaction with the world supported by the body. This paradigm finds applications in various research projects notably robotics, autonomous agents, and interactive interfaces. These research directions will also be central for developments in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Better interaction between human and computer, enhance our capacities or augment cognition as facilitated by technology. Finally, the paper would attempt to explore methods to analyze the relation between brain and action such as neuro-ethology, robotics, and computer simulation approach to model the behavior of interacting agents. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
