Abstract

This chapter discusses some fundamentals in the surface integrity of workpiece materials generated by grinding, including surface roughness, micro-structural changes and residual stresses induced by mechanical loading, thermal heating and phase transformation. The discussion concludes that different classes of materials have distinctive material removal mechanisms in grinding and hence have their individual surface integrity characteristics. The workpiece materials to discuss include metals, ceramics, semiconductors and composites. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
