Abstract

The details of many microbial processes can only be clarified by using pure cultures. Such processes include symbiotic activities during the decomposition of cellulose and other polymeric plant constituents. Hence, to assess the specific roles of microbial species in plant litter decomposition, it is important that these organisms are available as pure cultures.
