Abstract

This article explores the history and development of Youth Work in the UK from it’s early beginnings in the 1800’s through to the current day. The text outlines the key principles underpinning Youth Work with a particular focus on participation and active citizenship and its impact on young people and democracy. Included in the text is a case study from one of the UK’s Beacon Authorities for youth participation – Norfolk County Council. The article concludes with an overview of where youth work is heading in the future.
