The tectonic evolution of the Tyrrhenian area is related to the progressive approach and the collision between the Western Mediterranean and Adria microplates frol11 the Upper Cretaceous to the middle Pliocene. During this time span the Tyrrhenian Alps and Apennines were formed. From the Tortonian until the present a process of oceanization by mantle diapirism took place in the Tyrrhenian area associated with an extensional tectonic regime oriented east-west. The consequent isostatic foundering produced the Tyrrhenian Sea and governed its progressive deepening.
