Realia as carriers of national and historical overtones

Abstract

This article considers the strategies of translating realia. In the theory of translation, realia are words and phrases that designate objects and concepts closely linked with a particular national culture. Realia are frequently used in the products of the mass media. The main features of realia are their national and historical overtones. The task of the translator is to maintain these national and historical overtones in the target text. The translator must analyze the culture-specific elements of realia in the source text and re-define their place in the target context. © 2014 ACADEMY PUBLISHER Manufactured in Finland.
