The cascade control architecture is a standard solution in control engineering practice for industrial plants with considerable time delays. In this paper, an affine parameterization based design of cascade controllers for time delay plants is presented. The design rests on the use of the so-called quasi-integrating meromorphic function used to prescribe the desired open-loop behaviour. Due to the parameterization approach both the slave and master controllers are obtained as time delay systems. Unlike most of relevant papers on the subject, the primary controlled output is not considered to be directly dependent on the secondary one. The only property required from the secondary output is its markedly faster response to disturbances to be compensated for. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH Berlin Heidelberg.
