Abstract

Growth in the internationalization of higher education is driving the expansion of tertiary systems and institutions throughout the world, and intensifying student mobility. However, when students are provided with more opportunities to study abroad to earn a foreign or joint degree, the recognition of qualifications within nations and regions and across regions becomes an international agenda item for many countries. This chapter discusses the current situation in the recognition of joint qualifications and quality assurance in transnational higher education. Schemes, procedures, and challenges for recognition of a joint degree in Europe and Asia are then analysed. The role of recognition bodies and quality assurance agencies in qualification assessment is discussed at the end of the chapter.
