Perinatal aortic disease diagnosis and treatment has a long history. Congenital aortic disease and associated lesions have been extensively studied and treated since the early 1950s. More recently, prenatal ultrasound and intrauterine and neonatal treatment have achieved remarkable results. With expectant periodic obstetric physical examination, ultrasound, and MRI, new and more aggressive applications for both diagnosis and intrauterine and/or neonatal treatment have evolved. Thus, fetal aortic therapeutics are leading to better postnatal and long-term results. Simultaneously, we believe future genetic evaluation and therapeutics will play a larger role prior to and during these pregnancies.
