The research project GLOWA-Danube, which was one of the first transdisciplinary research networks in the field global change research in Germany, is introduced. GLOWA-Danube between 2001 and 2010 developed integrative tools and scenarios for the sustainable use of water in the Upper Danube basin under conditions of global change. Research was conducted by a large university-based network of scientists from natural and socio-economic fields. The paper introduces the project overall philosophy, its aims, design, new methodological approaches to developing simulation tools, scenarios and stakeholder dialogue and the scope and architecture of the Global Change Atlas” the Upper Danube, the primary communication tool between science and stakeholders.
