Cross-sectional imaging of the kidney

Abstract

Diverse spectrum of pathologies could involve the kidneys. Cross-sectional imaging is an important tool in detection and characterization of various diseases and guiding their management. In this chapter, we start by discussing the gross anatomy of the kidney. Then, we briefly discuss various imaging techniques utilized in the evaluation of the kidneys, mainly computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Next, we review different renal pathologies with emphasis on imaging patterns. Finally, we present practical algorithmic approaches for the differential diagnoses of different renal pathological entities.
