Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is among social and civilization diseases. Pregnancy complicated by diabetes occurs in 10% women. These pregnancies need intensive specialist care, because they are often terminated by perinatal death of newborns. Moreover, disturbances in glucose level lead to many complications such as: miscarriages, preterm births, fetus' malformations and fetus' macrosomy or hypotrophy. That is why diagnostic and treatment algorithms have been worked out. By glucose tolerance test screening performed at 24-28 gestational weeks detection of diabetes mellitus gravidarum significantly increased. This enables the implementation of comprehensive medical care in these patients and thus reduce the risk of maternal and fetal complications typical for diabetes. © Wydawnictwo Continuo.
