Abstract

The 20ha millennium festival site at Greenwich in London, lies on part of a former gas works site. British Gas is cleaning up this site as part of rolling programme of other contaminated gas works sites in the UK. The particular contamination problems and clean up solution for the Greenwich site are discussed. The clean-up contract, awarded to Edmund Nuttall, involves the excavation and removal of contaminated materials and replacement with clean fill. Some areas will be treated in-situ. One particular feature of this site is an old tar well which has leaked.
