Abstract

The Foyle Area is delineated, and the constitution of the Foyle Fisheries Commission and its statutory responsibilities are set out. The main fish species and the high level of productivity are discussed, as are the targets set by Dr Paul Elson in his report to the Commission in 1975 and the Commission's approach to achieving these targets. Various types of illegal fishing are described, including both nets and rods, and involving licensed and unlicensed fishermen. The use of poisonous substances to kill fish and "lamping" on spawning beds are also noted. Concern is also expressed over the increase in animal predators, especially cormorants and seals.
