Community psychology in Britain

Abstract

This chapter describes and analyses the evolution of community psychology in the United Kingdom. The British welfare state and its contradictions, the nature of British psychology and international developments in theory and practice have all been influential in shaping the relatively small field of community psychology in Britain. The contributions of clinical, educational, and social psychologists are highlighted, together with the largely informal networks that have developed for mutual support of psychologists who want to work in a community-orientated way. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
