Abstract

The pivotal role that VLBI observations have played in the development of the 'Standard Model' of active galaxies is briefly reviewed, and the impact of new VLBI capabilities and techniques for astrophysics is discussed. ^The importance of VLBI in this area is illustrated by achievements in snapshot imaging, astrometry, polarization observations, and findings on compact symmetric objects. ^(AIAA)
