Abstract

Mentoring is an important part of academic life, and is crucial in the relationship between advisor and advisee. This essay lays out what characteristics are most important to sustaining a solid mentoring relationship, based on the author’s personal experiences. The characteristics highlighted include trust, candour, responsiveness, time, emotional labour, and pushiness.
