Abstract

Characteristics of quadrupole mass filters and quadrupole ion traps are summarized in comparison with other mass analyzers. The theoretical basis for mass analysis using quadrupole fields is described in conjunction with the various scan methods and operating parameters. The high performance of quadrupole ion traps is illustrated by introducing some new developments of the instrumentation, including mass range extension, high resolution, MS/MS experiments, SWIFT and non-destructive detection. The importance of ion motion in ion traps is also illustrated by the simulation and laser tomography measurements.
