Abstract

The emergence of Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) provides convenience for ESM code developers using component modeling method to make the code segments loose coupled and reusable. This approach, however, may not be appropriate for ESM domain researchers, who pay more attention on constructing an ESM application using existing components in minimal time and do not care about the implementation details of each component. This paper proposes CMS, a compatible modeling standard that provides: (1) semantics for describing components, (2) adapters which support data transmission between components wrapped by distinct frameworks, (3) extensible interface for bringing other frameworks later. At the same time, an eclipse-based ESM tool suite is designed to help researchers create application by dragging encapsulated components. We are particularly concerned with simplifying development and increasing efficiency. Initial results from ongoing development demonstrate that this approach significantly reduces the time required to develop ESM applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.
