This chapter reviews the limited but growing empirical literature regarding common clinical assessment tools used with Asian and Asian American children. It also discusses various cultural values and norms that may influence the child's clinical presentation in the context of the mental status examination, and highlights special considerations in the initial clinical assessment process. Case examples are also provided to illustrate specific points. The focus is on traditional Asian values that may be relevant to clinical child assessment. The goal of the chapter is to help clinicians who conduct initial assessments and diagnostic interviews develop a preliminary cultural context from which to understand the potential range of values and clinical presentations they may encounter with Asian American children.
