This article provides an orienting overview of lifelong education from both a descriptive and an analytical point of view. The first part introduces some logics or social dimensions from the perspective of lifelong education. The second part presents a framework for lifelong learning policies, establishing a distinction between adult education and its expansion and further development in relation to lifelong learning. Thirdly, attention is paid, within an evaluative perspective, to the recent PIAAC programme and its results in the case of Spain. Finally, a propositive view will be adopted and a series of social benefits derived from improved standards of education and the extension of education to citizens throughout life will be synthesized. The above will allow us to reassess, in the final considerations, the importance of lifelong education in terms of equity and social cohesion.
