Abstract

Examines the role of mental health professionals in ending domestic violence. Each state has its own civil/criminal laws & penalties related to domestic violence; in some states, the offender may be criminally prosecuted even if the victim drops the charges. Various forms of civil relief available to battered women include mediation, protection orders, divorce/separation, child custody, alimony, child support, & money damages for personal injury. Mental health professionals must understand the legal system to effectively respond to cases involving violence toward adults. Therapists also need special training on the psychology of battering, & knowledge of available community resources so they can offer referrals for shelter, medical services, or financial aid in addition to providing counseling at each stage of the legal process. Mental health professionals are also called on to provide court-mandated treatment for abusers & to testify in spouse abuse & child custody cases. The critical need for shared goals & cooperation between mental health professionals & the legal system is emphasized. 24 References. J. Lindroth
