Abstract

Background Generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, employing artificial neural networks, enables the comprehension of user intent through commands and the generation of novel content, including images and text, by leveraging learned data. This technology holds great promise in the design field, as it allows autonomous creation based solely on design keywords. With an emphasis on the distinctive attributes of generative AI, this study aims to propose the potential utilization of AI in graphic design specifically for poster design. Methods The research was conducted utilizing literature review and case study methods. To provide a theoretical foundation, we conducted a literature survey to examine the features of generative AI and AI tools that are applicable to graphic design. Subsequently, we analyzed the facets of poster design derived from the AI workshop class, assessed the potential and constraints of employing generative AI in poster design, and explored the methodologies for generating posters using AI. Results The researcher identified that generative AI has the potential to serve as a valuable collaborative tool in supporting designers during the poster design process. However, it was concluded that the involvement of human designers is necessary to address the limitations of generative AI and to ensure a comprehensive and refined outcome in poster design. Conclusions In this study, the researcher proposes several avenues for the utilization of generative AI as a tool in poster design. First, the designer is the supervisor of AI and needs curatorial skills to set the algorithm and to edit and arrange the results to meet the poster’s objectives. Second, it is important to achieve exactly what you’re looking for with a clear prompt, and to create a unique poster that stands out from the crowd with a unique keyword that sets it apart from other posters. Third, designers need to be able to use a good mix of idea sketches and prompts to specifically communicate their intentions. This is an approach that uses the image-generating AI program itself as a tool rather than a design objective.
