Abstract

In this final chapter we discussed the prospect of a comprehensive network management system. The themes of the chapter were that (i) a conceptual comprehensive system is possible but that (ii) a physical embodiment of it is difficult. First we looked at a sampling of innovative networking technologies. Next we discussed a comprehensive management system from a conceptual point of view. Then, we looked at a number of challenges that impede the development of such a system. Finally, we proposed some direction for further work in network management, including a common metaphysical framework for network management, a catalogue of event correlation scenarios and paradigms, a catalogue of integration designs and mechanisms, off-line knowledge discovery, methods for service provisioning and billing, and ergonomic studies.
