In this chapter, I describe the basic principles of designing an eventrelated potential (ERP) experiment for psychology research and the rationales behind these principles. I also explain the challenges that researchers often encounter when trying to control potential confounding factors and keeping focus on the psychological processes of interest. I provide general suggestions to resolve these problems according to the literature together with my personal experience. Finally, I introduce some well-known experimental tasks that have been proven to reliably elicit specific ERP components. Researchers may consider developing their studies based on the classic paradigms.
