Abstract

Trochanteric bursitis, also known as "greater trochanter pain syndrome", is a frequent and often under-diagnosed cause of pain in the lateral hip region. The diagnosis is essentially based on the clinical examination ; however various forms of imaging may be useful to confirm the diagnosis and particularly to exclude other aetiologies. The different therapeutic options include non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, physiotherapy, local injections of cortisone and local anaesthetic, and extracorporeal shock wave therapy. Surgical intervention is only indicated in rare cases.
