Abstract

Significant reduction in system mass is required to achieve advancedaerospace objectives such as hypersonic flight, improved fuelefficiency and low cost access to space. The general needs for metallicmaterials with high structural efficiency will be outlined here, andcurrent approaches for achieving significant improvements in specificstrength and stiffness will be described.
