Abstract

This book includes five major parts: I. Production and accumulation of organic matter: a geological perspective; II. The fate of organic matter in sedimentary basins: generation of oil and gas; III. The migration and accumulation of oil and gas; IV. The composition and classification of crude oils and the influence of geological factors; V. A new approach to oil and gas exploration: application of the principles of petroleum generation and migration. The book demonstrates that the search for petroleum can benefit greatly from the integration and application of the principles of petroleum generation and migration. A systematic utilization of the new comprehensive understanding of petroleum formation and occurrence can improve the success rate in predicting petroleum-filled structures and hence decrease the financial risk of drilling. The book includes much petroleum geochemistry. 243 figures. (DP)
