Abstract

Vanillin is extracted from gastrodin and has been used in the treatment of epilepsy. Vanillin is known as one of the first synthetic spices. It can be used as intermediate for the synthesis of a variety of drugs, such as berberine and antihypertensive drug L-methyldopa, methoxy-pyrimidine, and heart disease drug papaverine. It has an antiepileptic and anticonvulsion effect and antibacterial action ability. As an important pharmaceutical intermediate, vanillin was used in the production of drugs. The main methods used for the synthesis of vanillin are nitrosation and glyoxylic acid method. These stable and high-yield processes would promote the development direction of vanillin.
