A personal account is given of the genesis of a programme of vocational training for general practice, with initial concentration on providing a training programme for teachers. Difficulty was experienced in forming a small committee of doctors who were able to give the time required in their very busy lives, who truly believed in the task to be attempted and thought it was attainable. Having developed and presented a programme, there was a good response of potential teachers. Further difficulty remains until it becomes clear with what body the responsibility for vocational training will be placed. Suitable funds need to be provided for such a programme. This will presumably be decided as a matter of policy in the political domain.
