Abstract

To better determine why Vannevar Bush created the memex and what he hoped to accomplish with such a machine, some of his published and unpublished writings on memex are discussed here. This material offers new perspective on how and why Bush published his 1945 essay “As We May Think” in the Atlantic Monthly. © 1989 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Copyright © 1989 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
