Abstract

Animal cloning is becoming increasingly useful for its applications in biological inquiry and for its potential use in pharmaceutical, medical, and agricultural fields. Due to the complexity of the numerous steps required in reconstructing oocytes by nuclear transfer, detailed protocols are required to minimize the developmental damages inflicted during these manipulations and to standardize procedures across laboratories. Moreover, because oogenesis and early embryogenesis differ widely among mammalian species, it is essential that protocols be adapted according to each species concerned. Our objective here is to detail the protocols that have been most successful in producing laboratory and domestic animal clones. © 2009 Humana Press, a part of Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
