Recent research on deposits associated with hypabyssal epizonal plutons is reviewed. The I-type series is petrographically distinct from the S-type. Five areas of advance are described: 1) plate tectonic settings and global distribution; 2) changes in the magmatic to meteoric fluid ratio and the concept of 'phyllic' overprint; 3) geochemical and thermal nature of PBMD fluids; 4) modelling studies of fluids and 5) understanding of PBMD fluids. The outlook is most promising. -R.E.S.
